Maintenance of Standards related to Canceled Projects

One result of JTC 1's review of its Program of Work is the cancellation of further activity on several published standards. This cancellation does not cause the withdrawal of the published standards, thus the question of maintenance of these standards has been raised.

Recognizing that the maintenance of its standards is a valuable service provided by JTC 1, the following process is to be used by JTC 1 SCs for those published standards whose projects have been canceled, as listed in (the final version of) N 4621:

  1. The SC (or other appointed maintenance authority) will continue to receive and respond to defect reports on the standard in question. If required, technical corrigenda may be issued for ballot. The SC may adopt streamlined procedures for the processing of these defect reports.
The SC is strongly encouraged to focus on correction of defects reported as a result of real usage, e.g. implementation or conformity assessment considerations of the standards.
  2. If the SC determines the standard should be revised or amended, an NP shall be balloted and approved by JTC 1 before work on the revision or amendment is initiated.
  3. The SC will continue to conduct the periodic review on the standards. If the SC recommends, and JTC 1 concurs that the standard be revised, an NP shall be approved by JTC 1 before work on the revision is initiated. Recommendations to confirm or withdraw the standard shall be processed in accordance with the JTC 1 Directives.
