Logistic Information

Overview

The 71^th plenary meeting of MPEG (ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG11) will be held in the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in the Hong Kong, China, during 17-21 January 2005. Some AHGs (Ad Hoc Groups) may meet as well during the preceding weekend, i.e., 15 and 16 January 2005.

Hong Kong (The Pearl of Orient) is a special administrative region of China, situated at the south of the Pearl River Delta.

Meeting venue

The meeting venue will be the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) at Clear water Bay of Hong Kong.

· Tentative meeting room allocation tables are ready both for the AHG meetings that will be held during the weekend and for the subgroup and break-out meetings that will take place during the main week.

Registration

You are strongly urged to send an e-mail message to the Convenor to inform him of your intention to attend the meeting.

Please fill in the meeting registration form and then print it, sign it and fax it to Ms. Iris Ting at +852 2358-1485. One form for one person. Only VISA and MASTERCARD are accepted for payment. Should you have any questions, please email to Percy Cheung at mpeg71@ee.ust.hk.

Registration fee for the 71^st MPEG Meeting is

· Early bird (on or before 15 Dec 2004) registration fee is 2,750 HKD (approximately 350 USD)

· Regular (after 15 Dec 2004) registration fee is 3,000 HKD (approximately 380 USD)

· On-site registration fee is 3,200 HKD (approximately 410 USD)

Social event

There will be a social event (a dinner buffet on a cruise in the Victoria Harbor) on the evening of Wednesday, 19 January 2005. Each registered MPEG delegate are invited (one free ticket included for each registration). You need to pay 500 HKD for each additional ticket. Please state the number of extra tickets in the registration form. Buses will be arranged to bring delegates from the meeting venue (HKUST) to the HungHom Ferry Pier in Kowloon. After the cruise, buses will be arranged to bring delegates to the meeting hotels. Further information on the transportation will be available on this web page soon.

We have arranged to have a travel agent, Hong Kong Four Seas Tours Ltd, to handle all the hotel reservation for all the delegates. Transportation from Hotel to the meeting venue

As the hotels are located at Tsimshatsui (in downtown area of Kowloon in Hong Kong) which is quite far away from HKUST (a 30 minute taxi ride), free shuttle buses will be arranged. Further information on the transportation will be available on this web page soon.

Delegates can also take public transportation from Tsimshatsui (or TST) to HKUST. Three possible ways are

· Take MTR (subway or Metro) from Tsimshatsui MTR station to Choi Hung MTR station. Exit at C1 (MTR fare= 7.5 HKD). Take (green) Mini Bus No. 11 or 11S (fare=5.5 HKD) to HKUST. Get off at HKUST bus stop (round-about).

· Take MTR (subway or Metro) from Tsimshatsui MTR station to Choi Hung MTR station. Exit at C2 (MTR fare= 7.5 HKD). Take (double decker) Bus No. 91 (fare= 4.9 HKD) or 91M (fare=6.1 HKD) to HKUST. Get off at HKUST bus stop (round-about).

· Take a taxi from Tsimshatsui to HKUST. Taxi fare may be 130 HKD.

Traveling tips

Visas

Traveling to Hong Kong is very easily. Many countries do not need special visa to come to Hong Kong. In case you have further query, you may refer to the guideline for applying from overseas for a visit visa for the Hong Kong. You can also seek further information when booking hotel with the travel agent.

Airport information

From Airport to hotel: Taxi fare is about 300 HKD. It takes about 50 minutes.

Department Tax

The current rate of the air passenger departure tax is 120 HKD per passenger.

Taxi

There are two kinds of taxis: red and green. The red taxis operate in the urban district while the green ones operate in the suburb (called the New Territories locally). To go between the hotels and HKUST, you will be using the red taxis. Prices for the red taxis are:

· The first 2 km is 15 HKD,

· Thereafter every 200m is 1.4 HKD,

· Every minute of waiting time is 1.4HKD.

Weather

Average temperatures in Hong Kong for January are around 15.8 ºC (avg. max.: 18.4 ºC; avg. min.: 14.3 ºC). Rain is not very frequent in January. The precipitation for the whole month of January is around 23.4 l/m². You can obtain detail and updated weather information from Hong Kong Observatory weather forecast.

Money

The standard currency in Hong Kong is the Hong Kong dollar. Most updated exchange rate can be found in Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited

· You can exchange your own currency at airport, hotel, Exchange Spots in the district (usually open Monday-Friday, 09:00-22:00),

· or directly withdraw from the many ATMs that you can find at banks

· Credit Cards: (Master, VISA) are usually accepted by most of the shop and restaurant. You can also withdraw cash using Credit cards from the ATM Machine easily available

Power

Electrical supply in Hong Kong is 220 V, 50 Hz.
Power plugs have three-square pins.

Food, Shopping and Sightseeing

Hong Kong is well known for the variety of food. There are many famous places for shopping such as Mong Kok, Tsim-Sha-Tsui, Causeway Bay. More information including sightseeing information can be found from Hong Kong Tourism Board.

Tipping

· A 10% service charge in a restaurant is usually included in the bill.

· Tips for taxi are not needed. You only need to pay according to the taxi meter.
