General Information 45th MPEG Meeting October 12-16 1998 Atlantic City, New Jersey
Atlantic City
Located just 58 miles southeast of Philadelphia on Absecon Island, Atlantic City is a fast-emerging ocean-side business destination. Atlantic City is easy to walk around. The wooden Boardwalk was originally built as a temporary walkway, raised above the beach so that guests could take a seaside stroll without treading sand into the grand hotels. The beach is free, family-filled and clean. The casinos are very casual.
The forty-fifth MPEG Meeting will be held at the Sheraton Atlantic City Hotel. The Sheraton Atlantic City Hotel is a new first-class, spacious, business hotel linked to the Convention Center. The Hotel provides a Business Center, ample parking for $8.00/day, and a Health Club.
Travel Documents
Foreign visitors entering the United States must be in possession of a valid passport. Participants from countries requiring a visa should apply to the US consular offices or diplomatic missions in their home countries.
Transportation to and around Atlantic City
Atlantic City is convenient to get to and convenient to get around in. Located within easy driving distance, the Sheraton is accessible by car and bus along three major highways leading directly into town. Modern rail service provided by New Jersey Transit arrives and departs through the terminal. Within the city, everything is conveniently located for access by walking, car or local public transportation on New Jersey Transit buses or shuttle buses.
Weather in Atlantic City
The climate in Atlantic City is mild and enjoyable in the fall. The average temperature in October is around 66° F/ 19° C for the high, and around 48° F/ 9° C for the low.
Attire
Dress is casual in Atlantic City, business attire is worn, but restaurants generally are accustomed to serving both formally and casually attired customers. In general, wear what you feel most comfortable in.
Dining
Atlantic City offers a variety of cuisine.
Tipping
Tipping is customary for many travel and dining services in the US. Here are some guidelines:
Taxi Typically, a 10% tip is provided to taxi drivers.
Restaurants Typically, a 15% tip is left for restaurant wait staff.
Porters Typically, one or several dollars is provided for bellboys, doormen, etc., depending upon the service requested. ($1/bag)

The Sheraton provides a complete Recreation Center, Spa, sauna and heated outdoor swimming pool.
Currency
Legal tender is the US dollar; there are 100 cents in one dollar. Coins issued by the government are bronze-colored for 1 cents; silver-colored for 5 cents, 10 cents, and 25 cents. Paper currency comes in denominations of $1, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, $1,000.
Exchange
The Sheraton Atlantic City can cash Travelers Checks at the Front Desk.
Banks
Major banks are open from 9am to 4pm, Monday thru Friday. They close on Saturday and Sunday and public holidays. Some banks and branches are open slightly longer hours; some banking services are not available an hour before closing.
