The Royal Cliff Beach Hotel

Opened in 1973 the Royal Cliff Beach Hotel helped to earn the resort its name for excellence.  Now more attuned to the needs of the package holidaymaker and slightly more budget conscious travelers, the Royal Cliff Beach Hotel provides superb value for money. In addition to the top-class hotel restaurants, the city center, with its abundance of superb Thai and international restaurants, is only $3 taxi-ride away.

SOCIAL EVENT

The Banquet, kindly sponsored by TISI, will be held on Tuesday, 4 December 2001.  Delegates and their accompanying members are cordially invited to attend.  The sponsors requested the shift of the day since Wednesday will be a national holiday (King’s Birthday) in Thailand.  Exact time and location will be provided in the meeting.

TRANSPORTATION

The city of Pattaya is located 160 km from Bangkok International Airport (BKK).  Driving time is between 2 to 3 hours depending on traffic conditions.  A taxi ride from BKK to the Royal Cliff would cost between 1,500 to 3,000 Baht (~$35-$70), depending on type of car, number of passengers and your bargain skills.  Details on public transportation can be found in:

http://www.pattayacity.com/pattaya/trans.html

A special shuttle service for the MPEG delegates between the airport and the Royal Cliff will be operated before and after the meeting.  The fee is 900 Baht (~$20) each direction per person.  The service will be scheduled according to arrival and departure times as reported in the registration form. Upon arrival, a person carrying an MPEG sign will be waiting for the delegates at the exit of the Customs area.

The shuttle service is payable through the hotel.  Please indicate your will to use the service in the Registration & Hotel Reservation Form.

The service depends on minimum number of passengers on a ride.  If the service cannot be arranged due to singular arrival time the delegate will be notified by e-mail.

The MPEG hospitality desk in the hotel will give information on the departure service.

Rental cars are available from local and international companies.  Driving in Thailand is on the left and is an experience for the adventurous.

CHECK-IN

A special MPEG check-in counter will handle concurrent hotel check-in and meeting registration.  Hotel services, meeting and transportation fees will all be detailed in same invoice.

HOSPITALITY DESK

The MPEG hospitality desk will operate from Monday till Friday 9:00 to 5:00 PM.  It will provide information about the meeting, handle breakout room allocation, etc.  The staff at the desk will be happy to assist with any other matter such as providing local information and confirming your return flight.

TIME ZONE AND WEATHER

Local time is GMT + 7. Thailand enjoys a tropical climate E warm and humid throughout the year. The weather in Pattaya in December is cooler and drier than the rest of the year.  Average daytime temperature is 280 C (830 F).  Rain is rare.  We suggest bringing only light cloths. If it gets a bit chilly during the evening you will buy there a sweatshirt for pennies.  In addition, do not forget to bring a bathing suit, hat, sunglasses and sun block lotion.

VISAS

Visitors usually do not require an entry visa to Thailand.  A 30-day stay permit is given by passport control upon arrival.  However, in case of doubt, please inquire with your travel agent, the Thai Embassy or Consulate in your country.

CURRENCY / CREDIT CARDS

Local currency is the Thai Baht (THB). Many foreign currencies are also accepted (yet the rate charge may be high). The current exchange rate is 1 USD = 44 THB. All major credit cards are widely accepted by hotels, shops and restaurants. ATMs (accepting international cards), banks and currency exchange offices are around every corner.

PUBLIC TELEPHONES / CELLULAR PHONES

There are public telephones throughout the city. Phone cards can be purchased in post offices, kiosks and bookstores.  Some telephones accept international credit cards.  Not all phones accept toll-free calling card numbers.  To dial International dial 001 followed by country code, area code and telephone number.

For using your personal cellular phone in Thailand, please be advised that the GSM system (900/1800) is operated by several operators. We suggest inquiring with your local network provider whether they have an agreement with operators in Thailand.

INTERNET CONNECTION

The computer room at the meeting will operate from Saturday 12/1 noon till Friday 12/7 noon and will provide Internet connection for laptops and stationary desktops. To avoid congestion in the computer room delegates are recommended to connect from their rooms through a local ISP.  Buying temporary Internet connection in Thailand is easy and cheap. So called “Internet cardsEare sold in bookstores and will give couple of hours of connection through a local phone number for few dollars.  It is also possible to buy Internet time online, which you may wish to do before arriving in Thailand. Loxinfo (http://www.loxinfo.co.th/LoxinfoShop/html/w_net.html) sells 30 hours of instant Internet access, usable (in units of seconds) over a period of one year, for 380 Baht (~$9). They will send a username, password and an electronic copy of a user manual that includes phone number listing for the entire country to your e-mail address.  A tip you will not find in the manual: their SMTP server address is mail.loxinfo.co.th.

Thailand uses the RJ-11 modular jack, which is the same as the United States.

ELECTRICITY

Thailand has 220 Volts, 50 Hz electricity supply. A two flat-pin plug (American/Japanese) can be used everywhere, and many sockets will also accommodate round-pin plugs.

TIPPING

Tipping is a common practice in Thailand. Everybody will expect a tip, but, unlike some other places, will give a very good service in return.  Better give the tip in cash directly to the person who serves you rather than adding it to the credit card.  Don’t be stingy and you will get a royal service and see a lot of happy faces.

LANGUAGE

The Thai people speak Thai.  However, English is a compulsory school subject and you will find your way around, especially among people whose main business is dealing with tourists.  All important road and shop signs are written also in English.

WATER QUALITY

Avoid drinking tap water.  In most hotels rooms, and obviously at the Royal Cliff, you will find free-of-charge bottles of drinking water.
