Food & Beverage

Thailand is famous for the reverence it holds for food. In Bangkok you can find food that meets any taste, at any time of the day or night, whether at air-conditioned restaurants or from street side vendors. You will find lavish restaurants in 5 star hotels, trendy cafes in shopping centers, and cozy little eateries in renovated houses serving everything from Italian and French, to Indian, Chinese or Japanese food, not to mention the ubiquitous international fast food chains.

Of course one of the major attractions in Thailand is Thai food. Well known for its fresh ingredients and variety of tastes, Bangkok offers the best from all over the country.

In the morning

The Royal Orchid Sheraton’s room rate when booking through the meeting website includes an extravagant breakfast buffet.

During the day

Lunch and coffee breaks will be served to the MPEG meeting delegates from Sunday till Friday. Light dinner will be served during the plenary on Friday evening.

Dining in and out

The Royal Orchid Sheraton features 6 top-class restaurants and lounges.

Across the street from the hotel is River City Ea shopping and dining complex featuring popular riverside restaurants. This is also where a dinner cruise departs every night at 7pm.

A taxi ride of few minutes will bring you to Silom area, with its endless culinary possibilities. For some recommendations, use this link.

Social event

MPEG delegates and their companions are cordially invited to a gala evening on Wednesday, January 18, at 7:00 PM (exact location will be given). The event is kindly supported by Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB).

Bangkok International Airport (BKK) is connected to downtown Bangkok via a fast toll-way. Driving time from the airport to the Royal Orchid Sheraton is between 30 minutes to over an hour, depending on time of day and traffic conditions. Friday afternoon is the worst time to arrive into the town.

MPEG airport transfer service

A special service for the MPEG delegates between the airport and the meeting venue will operate before, during and after the meeting. The service will be scheduled according to arrival and departure times of individual delegates, as reported in the Registration and Booking form. The cost of the service is included in the meeting facility fee.

Upon arrival, a person carrying an MPEG sign will be waiting for the delegates at the exit of the Customs area. The hospitality desk at the meeting venue will give information about the departure service.

The shuttle service will group together passengers who arrive within a certain timeframe. We will try to minimize waiting time as much as possible. When there is a need to wait, you will be able to load your baggage in the shuttle vehicle and take some refreshment at the terminal area until the time that you will be told to report back.

How to find the pickup service?

If you arrive in Terminal 1 turn left after exiting the custom counter and proceed towards the left end of the hall.

If you arrive in Terminal 2 turn right after exiting the custom counter and proceed towards the right end of the hall.

Look out for the pickup staff carrying a signboard with the MPEG logo.

Please contact the airport information counter if you have any problems. If the problem is not solved don’t hesitate to call the meeting organizer at local phone number 07-2839608.

Local transportation

Bangkok is infamous for its chaotic all-day traffic conditions. There are times during the day in which a taxi ride of one mile may take 30 minutes. Taxi is very cheap, though.

However nowadays Bangkok has entered the 21st century with its efficient network of the Sky Train (rolling, as hinted by its name, over elevated railways) and the MTR subway train. The network connects the busiest parts of the city, including Sukhumwit and Silom areas.

There is no Sky or Subway train station in the immediate vicinity of the Royal Orchid Sheraton. It is recommended to use the hotel free shuttle service or a taxi ($1-$2) to reach a nearby train station. The trip should take 10-25 minutes depending on traffic conditions. The closest stations are Hua Lampong and Sam Yan MTR stations, and Saphan Taksin Sky Train station. The staff at the meeting hospitality desk or the hotel concierge will be happy to assist you in finding your way.

Another option, probably the most timesaving and definitely the most enjoyable, is to take a 5-minute boat trip from Siphaya pier, just next to the hotel, to Saphan Taksin pier down the river, and then board the Sky Train at that place. The boat shuttles quite often, and its timetable is presented at the pier so you can plan your time accordingly.

Rent a car

Rental cars are available from local and international companies. Driving in Thailand is on the left and is an experience for the adventurous.

Computer Room

The computer room will operate all day from Sunday January 15 till Friday January 20 and will provide wired Internet connection for laptops and stationary desktops.

Wireless (Wi-Fi) Internet connection will be available throughout the convention area all day from Sunday January 15 till Friday January 20.

Some breakout rooms are located outside the convention area and will not be covered by the MPEG- dedicated wireless network. Most of these rooms will still be covered by the hotel’s network, which requires a payment for usage.

The usage of the free MPEG network requires configuration of the network adaptor with SSID and password. Details will be given in due time.

Important note!: Due to infrastructure constraints in Bangkok, the total bandwidth usable to the MPEG delegates will be far from optimum. The delegates are kindly requested to practice consideration and to avoid heavy downloads and video consumption.

Hi-Speed Internet in Guest Rooms

Internet connection through a LAN port is now available in all Royal Orchid Sheraton’s guest rooms. Please contact Guest Relations to get a username and password required for using the service.

The cost of this service is 600 Baht (~$15) per day for unlimited 24-hour access, payable directly to the hotel upon check-out.

Dial-up Connection

A cheaper alternative, though less convenient, is to use a dial-up connection of a local ISP. Buying temporary Internet connection in Thailand is easy and cheap. So called “Internet cardsEare sold in 7-eleven, FamilyMart, many bookstores and alike, and will give a couple of hours of connection through a local phone number for few dollars. Local phone calls from the hotel rooms are inexpensive.

Thailand uses the RJ-11 modular jack, which is the same as the United States.

General Information

Visa to Thailand

Visitors usually are not required to present an entry visa to Thailand if coming as tourists. A 30-day stay permit is given at the Immigration counter upon arrival. In case of doubt, please inquire with your travel agent, the Thai Embassy or Consulate in your country.

When passing through Immigration you will be required to fill out immigration forms (entry and exit), with the usual details such as personal details, citizenship, method of transport etc. These forms are usually distributed by the aircraft crew during the incoming flight. The form includes a field for “purpose of visitE which we recommend to mark as either “touristEor “conferenceE The “businessEoption may be problematic, since a visit for business purposes requires a pre-issued visa. Normally you should expect to have your passport stamped with no questions asked.

If you nevertheless need a visa, an invitation letter might be required in order to obtain it. Please indicate this request while filling out the Registration and Booking form, and we will make sure that an invitation letter issued by the proper authority is sent to you.

Time Zone and Weather

Local time is GMT + 7. Thailand enjoys a tropical climate E warm and humid throughout the year. The weather in Bangkok in January is relatively dry and not yet so hot. Average temperatures are 31.7° C (89.0° F) daytime high and 21.7° C (71.0° F) nighttime low. Rain is quite rare with an average monthly precipitation of 1.02 cm (0.40 in). We suggest bringing only light. In addition, do not forget to bring a bathing suit, hat, sunglasses and sun block lotion.

Thai people appreciate stylish business clothing, but tourists are exempted. By good manners avoid shorts and slippers in the convention and dining areas of the hotel.

Currency / Credit Cards

Local currency is the Thai Baht (THB). Many foreign currencies are also accepted (yet the rate charge may be high, so it is recommended to exchange at a bank or an exchange counter). The current exchange rate is around 1 USD = 41 THB, volatile as the current currency market is. All major credit cards are widely accepted by hotels, shops and restaurants. ATMs (accepting international cards), banks and currency exchange offices are around every corner.

Public Telephones / Cellular Phones

There are public telephones throughout the city. Phone cards can be purchased in post offices, kiosks and bookstores. Some telephones accept international credit cards. Not all phones accept toll-free calling card numbers. To dial International dial 001 followed by country code, area code and telephone number.

For using your personal cellular phone in Thailand, please be advised that the GSM system (900/1800) is operated by several operators. We suggest inquiring with your local network provider whether they have an agreement with operators in Thailand. A more economic idea is to buy a prepaid SIM card with a local number, available at the DTAC and AIS shops on the arrival floor of Bangkok airport and many shops throughout the city. The SIM card costs few hundreds Bahts and is rechargeable with so-called 1-2-Call cards available in nominations starting at 300 Baht at every kiosk, 7-Eleven shop etc.

Thailand has 220 Volts, 50 Hz electricity supply. A two flat-pin plug (American/Japanese) can be used everywhere, and most sockets will also accommodate round-pin (European) and diagonal (Australian) plugs.

Although not mandatory, tipping (at your discretion) is appreciated in Thailand. In most cases you will be happy to tip because of the superb service.

The Thai people speak Thai and write with the Thai alphabet. However, English is a compulsory school subject and you will find your way around, especially among people whose main business is dealing with tourists. All important road and shop signs are written also in English.

Water Quality

Avoid drinking tap water. In most hotel rooms, and obviously at the Royal Orchid Sheraton, you will find free-of-charge bottles of drinking water.

Phone number for urgent matters

In case of any problem encountered during your stay, feel free to contact the meeting organizer at his local phone number: 07-2839608.
