    Travel information

Klagenfurt is the capital of Carinthia, the southernmost federal state of Austria in Central Europe as depicted below.

    Travel by car:

There are two main motorways in Austria leading to Klagenfurt, namely the A2 (Sudautobahn) and the A10 (Tauernautobahn).

    - From the east/Vienna: A2 motorway towards Graz and Klagenfurt (Graz - Klagenfurt approx. 130 km)

    - From the north/Salzburg: A10 motorway to Klagenfurt (Salzburg - Klagenfurt approx. 240 km); extra toll between the "Tauerntunnel" and "Katschbergtunnel" (€ 9.50).

    - From the north/Linz: A9 motorway towards Graz then A2; or A10 motorway towards Salzburg and then A10 to Klagenfurt

    - From the north/Germany/Tyrol: via Kufstein - Mittersill - Felbertauerntunnel (toll) - Lienz -Villach - Klagenfurt (no motorway but scenic drive)

    - From the south: A2 motorway (A23 in Italy) via Udine - Tarvisio or A11 motorway from Slovenia, toward Villach and Klagenfurt

For the Klagenfurt University leave the A2 motorway at "Klagenfurt West" exit "Minimundus/Klagenfurt Wörthersee", straight ahead to the "Wörthersee Suduferstrabe", and after approximately 200 meters turn left to the university. There are a sufficient number of parking lots around the university area (free of charge).

During summer vacation time an increased volume of traffic is to be expected, resulting in traffic jams with possible delays up to several hours, especially on weekends between Salzburg and Villach on the A10!

NOTE: Motorways are toll roads and vehicles require a so-called "Vignette" which is available at motoring organizations like ÖAMTC (http://www.oeamtc.at/), ARBÖ (http://www.arboe.or.at/), gas stations (AE)(also at the border in neighboring countries), etc.

    Travel by airplane:

The most convenient way to get to Klagenfurt is by airplane. Regular flights between Vienna/Frankfurt and Klagenfurt are offered 2 - 3 times a day by Austrian Airlines (AUA), a Star Alliance partner. In addition low cost flights are provided by HLX from Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover, and KÖln/Bonn.

    Sightseeing / vacation

Carinthia (Karnten) is the lively south of Austria. Hospitality here has always been a guiding principle. Between Austria's highest mountain, the Grobglockner (3.798 m) in the north, and Lake Wörthersee in the south, there are plenty of opportunities for being active, relaxing, and sightseeing. Carinthia offers a unique blend of 200 lakes for bathing and of mountains, providing ideal conditions for water and/or mountain sports enthusiasts and cyclists. Families are particularly welcome in Carinthian tourist areas and hotels.

Southern flair, a Renaissance-style historical town with beautifully renovated houses and lovely courtyards with bars and restaurants, a wide range of cultural and sports events and entertainment can be enjoyed in Klagenfurt. Picturesque castles and medieval churches can be found near the city; "Minimundus", a park with 170 models (1:25 scale) of the world's most beautiful buildings on display, located very close to the university, is not only attractive for children.

Visitors can conveniently drive (or go by train) to world-renowned cities like Vienna, Salzburg and Venice within 2 - 3.5 hours time. The Mediterranean Sea is just approx. a 2 hours drive south of Klagenfurt. The Slovenian capital Ljubljana is even closer.
